Meet Penelope Plessas: A Happythreads Affiliate IE Medical Student Balancing Clinical Training and Student Life

Life Between Lectures, Wards and 3 a.m. Coffee Runs

Entering my final year of medical school in Ireland, reflecting on the journey so far and what comes next.

From “That Will Never Be Me” to Final Year

If you had told me several years ago that I would be entering 2026 as a final year medical student, juggling exams, clinical placements, content creation, and a mild caffeine dependency… I likely would have laughed in your face.

Yet, here I am.

Training Far From Home

I am a Canadian medical student training in Ireland, nearing the end of my final year before transitioning into residency. My days are split between hospital wards, lectures, revision schedules, and the very real challenge of maintaining a somewhat normal sleep schedule. Medicine is demanding in ways that are hard to fully appreciate until you’re living it, yet so incredibly rewarding.

Learning Independence, One Uncertain Step at a Time

Being far from home has shaped my experiences in ways I couldn’t have anticipated. It’s pushed me to be more independent and more resilient, and to accept uncertainty with grace. I’ve found that confidence isn’t about knowing everything, it’s about being willing to keep learning and trusting yourself along the way.

Finding Balance in the Chaos

Somewhere in the middle of the chaos, I found myself looking for ways to process it all and stay grounded. Content creation became a way to decompress, connect, and remind myself that none of us are on this journey alone, even if it may feel like that at 3 a.m. on an overnight shift.

Looking Ahead to What’s Next

As graduation approaches, I’m focused on finishing strong and stepping into my career with an open mind. For now, I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped me so far and the people I’ve met along the way. Medicine is a privilege, and I’m so excited to see where it takes me next!

Sincerely,
Penelope
